Throughout the book of James, the Apostle continually asks the same question: How real is your religion? In 3:13-18, James again asks his question, this time doing so using the topic of wisdom. Using a contrast between heavenly wisdom and earthly wisdom, James presents the major attributes that characterize those who are wise according to God’s standards and those who are wise according to this world. At the end of the descriptions, the believer must ask himself, "How real is my wisdom, and do I posses the characteristics of true wisdom?"
