The wonder of Christmas is due to the power and glory of our promise keeping God. God is on a mission to redeem fallen man and transform him into the image of his Son. The birth of Jesus is a key part of that redemption plan and displays the glory of God.

Failure to recognize the enemy within places believers in danger. Peter's inability to acknowledge and deal with his own faults led to his denial of Jesus. His broken spirit and repentance will eventually bring him to a point of restoration with Jesus and reliance on the Spirit of God.

Jesus had just celebrated the Passover with his disciples. He had endeavored to teach them several important lessons during the evening. One of the most important lessons had been at Gethsemane when he told them to watch and pray so that they would not fall into temptation.

In one of the most agonizing moments of his earthly ministry, Jesus will teach his disciples the importance of prayer. Prayer is critical to our ability to have victory over temptation and to glorify God with our lives. Prayer prepares our hearts to choose God's will over our own.

God instituted the Passover celebration for the people of Israel so that they would remember how he had delivered them from Eqypt. As he celebrated his last Passover with his disciples, Jesus would transform that celebration into a remembrance of his sacrifice on the cross to deliver his disciples from their sin.

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is central to our salvation and is at the heart of the gospel message. This will be the theme of the last three chapters of Mark's gospel. As Mark sets the stage for this event, we will be confronted with several different individuals and their relationships with Jesus Christ.
