Paul has just finished making the point that no one is justified by his works. In the Jewish mind, this begs the question, "What about Abraham, wasn't he justified before God through his obedience?"

From this point in Romans chapter 3 and through chapter 8, Paul will emphasize the importance of faith in the christian experience. The theme of faith alone will dominate his teaching. He begins this section by contrasting faith and works to emphasize the fact the salvation by faith alone excludes any possibility of our boasting.

What does it mean to be "under sin"? Paul declares that the whole world is not only under sin but accountable to God. Exactly what does that mean and what can we do about it?

The judgment of God is coming. Some will be condemned and their condemnation is just. Some will be saved. Who will be condemned and who will be saved? How do I make sure that I am among those who will be saved in the day of judgment?
